Why is it important to clean the mattress regularly?

It's important to clean your mattress regularly to ensure a healthy sleeping environment. Sweat and other bodily fluids can cause stains and unpleasant odors. Or do you have a toddler at home? Then you've probably noticed the persistent smell of a small urine accident while sleeping.

Over time, dust, dander, and mites also accumulate. These can trigger allergies. Bad bacteria and mold can also build up, leading to health problems.

So, to sleep better and stay healthy, regular mattress care and cleaning is a must! It also extends the lifespan of your mattress.

3 tips for mattress care

In addition to proper mattress cleaning, there are other measures you can take to extend the lifespan of your mattress. These can also help prevent serious soiling.

Tip 1: Air your mattress daily

Did you know that a person loses at least half a liter of fluid every night? This is absorbed daily by your mattress and bedding. To prevent mold and mildew from forming, you should air your home daily.

20-30 minutes a day is enough. Make sure the air can reach your mattress, pillows, and duvet. To achieve this, you can't, for example, spread the duvet over the entire mattress.

Additionally, you can air your mattress thoroughly every 3-4 months. Remove it from the bed frame and air it upright. The same goes for your pillows and duvet. You can even hang them outside on the clothesline when the weather's nice.

Tip 2: Turn the mattress regularly

Most people sleep in the same position every night. This leads to so-called "sagging" (bed sagging). Therefore, flip your mattress approximately every three weeks. This prevents sagging and extends the lifespan of your mattress. Some mattresses have seasonal symbols to help you remember which side to flip.

Tip 3: Vacuum your mattress monthly

Vacuuming your mattress should also be part of your regular care and cleaning routine. This is especially important for allergy sufferers. It's best to use a special upholstery nozzle for this. This will prevent damage to the interior. To avoid damaging the cover, you should set the vacuum cleaner to a low suction level.

In addition to your mattress, it's also important to vacuum the rest of your bed and underneath it. It's sufficient to do this once a month.

Important!: Vacuuming your mattress isn't enough to get rid of mites. Here's what you can do to get rid of mites.

How do I clean the mattress cover properly?

Mattresses are encased in a textile covering called a mattress cover. This is often removable thanks to a zipper. This is best washed in the washing machine, if possible. The care label will provide information on how to wash the cover.

Mattress covers are usually made of a functionally designed material. Washing the cover once or twice a year is perfectly sufficient. This allows you to clean the mattress without washing the cover.

Our washing tip: Simply add our Bactador Laundry Rinse to the fabric softener compartment along with your laundry detergent. Wondering why this is a good idea? Well, most laundry detergents simply mask odors with fragrances. After a short time, the unpleasant smell caused by sweat or urine, for example, will be noticeable again. Bactador Microbiology, however, uses microbiological ingredients to truly remove odors permanently. Just give it a try and see for yourself the hygienically fresh results.

Drying mattress covers

It's important to dry your mattress cover properly to prevent mold growth. You can do this by laying it flat to dry or hanging it on a clothesline if the weather permits. Avoid drying the cover in direct sunlight.

In general, you should avoid using heat when drying. Even covers suitable for tumble drying should be left to dry in the fresh air. This prevents the material from shrinking. Even if you've used our Bactador laundry conditioner, the cover should not be put in the dryer afterward. This is the only way to keep the microbiological ingredients active and ensure that odors are removed deep into the pores.

Make sure the cover is completely dry before putting it back on the mattress. A damp cover can damage the mattress and encourage mold growth.

How do I remove dirt from my mattress?

Now we'll look at how you can easily remove the most common types of dirt without damaging the functionally designed material of the cover. Or what you can do if not only the mattress cover but also the mattress core is affected by dirt.

The secret weapon for mattress cleaning is called Bactador. The microbiological ingredients break down dirt and odor particles until nothing remains. This way, the source of the odor is removed deep down and truly permanently.

And it's super easy to use. All you have to do is spray the Bactador Odor and Stain Remover onto the stain (you should first remove coarse dirt with a cloth). Then, the Bactador microbiology needs time to unfold and take effect. Simply let the mattress cover and mattress core air dry. If you still notice an unpleasant odor after 24 hours with extremely stubborn odors, you can repeat the process. The best part: Bactador is not only suitable for humans and animals, but has also been dermatologically tested and rated "very good."

Hygienically clean mattress

The most common types of pollution

Now you know how to remove odors easily and permanently with Bactador microbiology. But what are the most common types of odors?

Unpleasant smells

An unpleasant smell emanating from your mattress isn't exactly a pleasant, and certainly not a relaxing, thought. After all, bad smells disrupt your sleep.

But unpleasant odors emanating from mattresses aren't uncommon. They're associated with all kinds of soiling. So, there's nothing to be ashamed of. Moreover, you can easily and permanently remove these unpleasant odors.

Bactador microbiology, available in spray or concentrate form, removes unpleasant odors even from non-machine-safe mattress cores. Unlike conventional "odor sprays," household remedies, or essential oils, it doesn't just temporarily mask odors, but removes them deep into the pores. True to the motto "Finally, permanently odor-free."

sweat stains

The half liter of fluid a person loses at night is sweat. This seeps directly into the mattress. If the mattress isn't breathable or you don't ventilate it sufficiently, sweat stains can occur.

urine

Especially in families with small children, small accidents are not uncommon, visible as yellow stains. Many parents then stress out and try to remove the urine using any means, only making things worse. Even once the stains are removed, the urine smell is particularly persistent and cannot be eliminated with conventional means.

Thanks to Bactador microbiology, these situations can be handled without stress. The naturally derived, good bacteria in Bactador remove urine deep into the pores and truly permanently. Regardless of whether the accident has just occurred or was discovered later. The microbiological ingredients in our Bactador products are safe for humans, animals, and materials, and are dermatologically tested with a "very good" rating.

Vomit

Vomiting in bed – everyone has probably experienced it at some point. So it's no surprise that vomit is one of the most common causes of soiling. First, you should roughly wipe away the vomit with cloths. You can easily and permanently remove the rest, especially the stubborn odor, with the microbiological Bactador Odor and Stain Remover.

bloodstains

Blood stains on mattresses are not uncommon, especially among women. But have you ever had to remove a blood stain from your mattress? Yes? Then you probably know how stubborn and difficult it was to remove. But next time, just try our Bactador Odor and Stain Remover.

coffee stains

Breakfast in bed with fresh coffee. It could be so wonderful. But then you're careless for just a moment, and it happens: a coffee stain on the sheets that seeps into the mattress. Our Bactador microbiology helps you ensure that breakfast in bed remains a pleasant experience.

Red wine stains

A glass of red wine in the evening to relax is part of some people's routine. Whether while cooking, eating, or even in bed. But just one wrong move and a bright red stain appears. But don't worry, you don't have to give up your wine just because of the potential stains. Bactador microbiology takes care of that.

Mildew and mold

Improper ventilation or excessive humidity can lead to mildew. In the worst case, even mold. Well, thanks to Bactador microbiology, it's not that bad after all. The good bacteria remove mildew deep down and truly permanently.

By the way: There are repeated claims online that direct sunlight can help with mildew stains. However, we advise against this if you want to enjoy your mattress for a long time.

How can I prevent contamination?

Even a fitted sheet can protect your mattress from some soiling. However, just like with mattress covers, the problem is that all liquids simply seep through. There are two options to protect not only the mattress core but also the mattress cover from soiling.

mattress topper

A mattress topper is a practical solution if soiling occurs frequently. It's a cover that's attached to the mattress with tension straps. Don't worry, it won't affect your sleeping comfort.

The advantage is that most are waterproof and breathable. If soiled, the pad can easily be washed in the laundry with Bactador laundry conditioner. Or it can be sprayed with Bactador odor and stain remover.

Topper

Toppers can also prevent soiling on your mattress. The advantage of a topper is that they can even compensate for an improper firmness of your mattress. However, toppers are significantly thicker than regular mattress pads, so they can't be easily washed in the washing machine. However, our Bactador Odor and Stain Remover reliably removes odor and dirt particles deep into the pores with a simple spray.

Are household remedies really suitable for cleaning mattresses?

We've all been there – you discover a problem and immediately search for possible home remedies that will, for example, easily remove a coffee stain from your mattress. If only it were that easy. Most of the time, however, you find instructions like, "You have a coffee stain on your mattress and want to remove it? No problem. All you need is lemon juice, cottage cheese, foam detergent, and ideally, gall soap." Besides all the tools, you also have to plan for a lot of time.

Most household remedies, such as carpet foam or soap, are only suitable for superficial cleaning. This means that while the stain may be barely visible, the odor is still clearly noticeable. And where there are unpleasant odors, there are unfortunately still traces of the dirt.

To get the most out of your mattress, you should avoid household remedies like vinegar, alcohol, or a mixture of citric acid and salt. These are known to be harsh on the material.

So instead of starting unsatisfying experiments with baking powder, baking soda, etc., simply rely on a product that has proven itself for years: Our Bactador Odor and Stain Remover, with the power of microbiology and the certainty of permanently removing even the most stubborn odors, right down to the deepest pores. Still not convinced? Then check out what other customers are saying about our product:

This product has most likely saved my mattress. It doesn't smell anymore, and the animals haven't peed on the same spot again (as they usually do). I always have a bottle at home. I've been buying it for years, and I'm very satisfied. – Jacqueline M.

I bought it for my mattress, which has a slightly strange smell. The spray is easy to apply and evenly spreads. It's already worked after just one use. The strange smell is gone, and the mattress now smells neutral. – Ella23

Mattress cleaning devices

You'll often see recommendations to clean your mattress with a steam cleaner. Steam cleaners create moisture, which is supposed to kill germs and fungi. The problem, however, is that a steam cleaner creates too much moisture. This then gets inside your mattress. The high pressure exerted on the mattress by the steam cleaner also doesn't extend the life of your mattress.

You should vacuum your mattress regularly. Here's what you should keep in mind.

What can I do about mites?

Dust mites can be a real nuisance. But you can prevent them! Here are a few tips:

  1. Ventilate your bedroom, including your mattress, pillows and duvet, daily.
  2. Use allergen-proof mattress covers. They prevent mites from getting into the mattress.
  3. Wash your bed linen regularly at least 60 degrees to kill the mites.

How to combat mite infestation

Dust mites are present in every mattress. However, with proper cleaning and hygiene, you can minimize the extent of mite infestation on your mattress. Repellents like ARDAP Repell Mite Spray are suitable for this.

However, simply repelling the mites or letting them die isn't enough. Even dead mites continue to cause dermatological and allergic problems. After removing them, you should therefore thoroughly vacuum your mattress and the surrounding area to remove any product residue. It's also recommended to wash the mattress cover and bedding.
